Women & Children First
Edgewater's best bookstore
The name says it all – or at least enough to give you a good picture – at Women & Children First. The Andersonville bookstore, which started as a small storefront in 1979, was conceived with the goal of promoting women writers and of providing an environment that catered to women’s lives, interests and issues. In its expanded location on Clark Street, the store carries more than 30,000 books, making it one of the largest feminist bookstores in the country.
The store also carries music, videos, magazines, journals and “pride products.” Andersonville has a large number of gay-owned businesses, and Women & Children First has one of the best selections of lesbian and gay fiction and non-fiction in Chicago. Perhaps the most notable thing about the store, however, is the discerning and wide-ranging tastes of the staff, which includes teachers, grad students, writers and political activists.
