Highrise started wave of South Loop towers

The Gammonley Group was considered a pioneer when it began sales for 1111 Wabash, a 33-story highrise in the South Loop, during 2001. Four years later, the neighborhood was rife with construction cranes and highrises were being completed or started on nearly every street.

Architects Perkins, Pryde, Kennedy & Steevensz and Fujikawa Johnson & Associates designed 28 different floor plans for the 232-unit building (originally 247). Some of the condos have more than 250 square feet of outdoor space and others are duplexed. The L-shaped building is designed to have six corner units per floor, maximizing light and views of both the lake and city, and residential units do not start until the sixth floor.

The building has 24-hour door staff, a business center, retail space and a drycleaner. The roof top recreation level includes a terrace, swimming pool, fitness center, a spa and a hospitality room with a kitchen. Condos range from convertibles to three-bedrooms with dens and include a free parking space, valued around $35,000. Prices onthe 26 units remaining for sale in July 2005 ranged from the $250s to $1.6 million.
